Generally, when we think
about health insurance, we think about health insurance plans
that cover our doctor visits or a hospital stay. We do not
always consider the possibility of being injured on the job or
having an accident outside the job which cause an inability to
perform our job.
Disability insurance will cover lost income if
you become ill or injured on your job and can not return to
work. This insurance will not cover your entire salary but you
will still have money to live on until you recover.
When your disability is expected to last at
least twelve months, you may be eligible for Social Security
benefits. These benefits are available if you can not work for
the entire duration of your leave from work. Almost every state
in the U. S. requires some type of employer-paid disability.
The premium for this disability insurance is deducted from your
paycheck.
There are two types of disability insurance
policies: short-term disability and long-term disability.
Each has its own coverage period and each defines when
payments will begin. A short-term disability policy has
coverage for no longer than two years. You have to wait
fourteen days before you start receiving compensation. A
long-term disability insurance policy may cover you for
the rest of your life. It takes longer for the payment
period to start.
When you are looking at disability insurance
plans, you should look at the options available that offer
protection for you. One is that your policy will not be
cancelled unless you do not pay the premiums. You lock in your
premium with this type of policy and your benefits will not
decrease. You can also choose a guaranteed renewable policy
means that the same benefits will be available ever year. Your
premium will increase only if the premiums increase for every
policyholder within the same rating class as yours.
Research various disability insurance policies
on the Internet. There are many options available. You should
discuss these various options with an insurance broker who can
assist you in finding the best disability insurance plan for
you and your family and your budget.
